The Drood Inquiry

The broken clock

The night of Edwin’s disappearance was notable for a great storm that raged in Cloisterham, and the next morning the people emerged to see the damage to their city and Cathedral:

It is seen then that the hands of the Cathedral clock are torn off; that lead from the roof has been stripped away, rolled up, and blown into the Close; and that some stones have been displaced upon the summit of the great tower.

The damage has been widely attributed to the storm, but could something more sinister be at hand here? Could the displaced stones, and broken clock hands, be signs of a struggle atop the Cathedral tower, and a fatal fall for Drood?
